Reading
In reading, we are working on fiction texts with a focus on point of view, summarizing, and theme. Students are also working on being able to identify parts of speech and how each functions within a sentence. We're also looking at the difference between simple, compound, and complex sentences.
Writing
In writing we're learning from the best using mentor texts (amazing stories with creative writing styles). We explore a single book each week, and then pull out a single sentence and really dig into what makes it work well. Students also try their hand at revising those sentences with their own creative additions. Finally, students are working on creating "imitation" sentences in which they use the same sentence structure to create their own unique, well-written sentences.
Math
We're working on geometry right now. Students are learning about straight, right, acute, and obtuse angles. They've had some practice on how to measure those angles using both pattern blocks as well as protractors. We're also learning about perpendicular, parallel, and intersecting lines. We'll be digging in a bit deeper as we explore different shapes. With that foundation, we will spend time measuring both perimeter and area of different shapes.
Science
Students are exploring the Earth's surface, including erosion and other processes that can change Earth's landscape.
May 15 Field Trip
We'll be visiting the Irish American Heritage Center to see the play Mytholomania! on May 15. This includes a bus ride to and from the theater. Many students have returned their permission slips and turned in money for the trip. If you still need to do so, don't worry - we have a little more time. The cost is $8. If you need a new copy of the permission slip, please let me know.
