This coming week we'll begin a new reading unit exploring informational text, and students will be reading about how people respond to natural disasters. We will be practicing the "reread" strategy to deepen understanding. We'll also be looking closely at the text structure, Compare/Contrast to see how authors use that to help readers understand the topic.
We're continuing to work with multiplication in math class, and will soon be moving into our next unit about multiplication. This module introduces multi-digit multiplication. To start, students build the Great Wall of Base Ten to examine the relation-
ships among place values and to make generalizations about what happens when a number is multiplied by 10, 100, or 1,000. From there, students will model and solve single- and double-digit multiplication combinations.
I apologize for the abbreviated updates; we're in the midst of buying a house, packing up the old place, and preparing the new home for our move next week. I'll be out on Thursday (10/12), Friday (10/13), and Monday (10/16), so students will have the opportunity to impress their substitute teacher as much as they have impressed me!
