Thank you for your patience with me during the last few weeks of minimal website updates. We have finally finished our move, all the boxes are unpacked, and my home office is useable again so I can update our website!
Math
We just finished unit 1 of our Bridges curriculum. Students took a test last week and we're ready to dive into our next unit, Multi-Digit Multiplication and Early Division. Students will continue to build multiplicative reasoning as they work with multi-digit multiplication and early division. We'll use base ten area pieces to investigate place value patterns, as well as model and solve single- and double-digit multiplication problems. They'll move from building multiplication arrays to sketching them. They'll also build ratio tables and use them to make generalizations about the effects of multiplying by 10, 100, and 1,000. In the third module, students will solve a variety of multiplication story problems, and work together to compile and compare the strategies they have been practicing. In Module 4, students will solve division problems that require them to make sense of remainders in a variety of contexts.
Reading
This week we'll begin unit 1, week 4 of our reading curriculum. This focuses on narrative nonfiction. We will spend time exploring how to use context clues to understand what we're reading. We'll also be focusing on recognizing cause and effect, using the reread strategy to deepen comprehension.
Writing
Students completed their first "masterpiece," a personal narrative about their own life. Now that students have experienced the full writing process from brainstorming to publishing, they'll be able to write another personal narrative to showcase special moments in their lives, putting their new skills into practice as they strive to write another amazing story about their own lives.
