Math
This week during math we'll continue to work with multiplication strategies. Students will practice using ratio tables, arrays, number lines, and area models to solve multiplication problems. Students will also begin learning how to work independently in math centers. During center time, I'll begin working with small groups of students to support them with skills they need to be successful with multiplication. Learning how to manage themselves while doing independent practice in centers will be critical in order for me to differentiate small group instruction. This will take us a few weeks to master as we practice what it looks like to be attentive and active math students.
Reading
This week we're going to continue working with fairy tales, identifying characters, setting, and plot sequence. Students will learn about how to cite text evidence to support comprehension questions about the stories they read. They'll also be taking a brief assessment about their understanding of how nouns and adjectives work within a sentence.
Writing
This week students are diving into their personal narrative practice. We'll work together to understand that a personal narrative is a true story in which the writer is the main character in the story. Students will learn how to brainstorm story ideas, and we'll listen to a few mentor texts that show what a personal narrative can look and sound like. We'll talk about how authors can take a personal memory and narrow it down to a seed of a story. For example, students can take a memory of going to the fair and then focus in on a favorite activity at the fair, and then narrow down their focus even more by writing about winning a teddy bear while doing a ring toss at the fair. By focusing on specific moments, writers will develop the ability to share special memories in a more impactful way.
Social Studies
This week students are continuing to work on their culture slideshow project. Throughout the week, we'll be reading stories featuring different people from various cultures.
NWEA/MAP Testing
This week students will take the NWEA/MAP test for reading and math. It is important for students to try their best. This assessment helps us identify areas of strength and areas for growth so that we can best meet each students' individual needs.
Library Checkout Day
Our class will visit the school library every Friday at 10:20 to check out books.
